John Lennon was named the fifth greatest singer of all time in a poll conducted of musicians (including Ringo Starr) by Rolling Stone magazine, reports Gigwise. The top five from the bottom up: Lennon, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and, at the top, Aretha. Some of the profiles were written by a famous name. Lennon's was written by Jackson Browne. Paul McCartney (no profile) made #11 (right behind James Brown and ahead of Little Richard). Here's the complete list from rollingstone.com. You have to wonder, if musicians were the ones who were polled, why Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett were completely forgotten and are nowhere to be found. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All you need is ... (11/12/08) A Liverpool hospital accounts log donated by Paul McCartney to the Sunbeam Trust may have solved the mystery of whether there was a real Eleanor Rigby, reports NME.com, the UK Guardian and the Press Association. The log contains the signature of an "E. Rigby" worked as a scullery maid at the hospital. The document, along with the discovery of a grave marked Eleanor Rigby in in the Woolton area of Liverpool in the 1980s, suggests that Rigby may have been a real person known to McCartney and was the inspiration for the song of the same name. McCartney had previously said he came up with the name Eleanor because of actress Eleanor Bron, who appeared in the film 'Help!'. The document will be auctioned by London's Idea Generation Gallery Nov. 27.

"I had been worried that Beatles songs would be priced out of the market, but was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case," Tom Nester-Smith, the client services director at Lowe London, which created the ad, told Brand Republic News. "We didn't set out to specifically create an ad based around a Beatles song, but we found that the lyrics summed up the ad's message that a present's value is in its appropriateness, rather than its price."
Sony/ATV, which holds the copyrights to the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, say it's the first time a Beatle song has been used by a major British advertiser.
(Comment: It's actually a cute little ad, though hearing Beatle songs used commercially is still a bit unsettling.)
