Abbeyrd's Beatles Page news digest for Wed 9/24/08

1) The latest threat to disrupt the McCartney Israel show is coming from right-wing Jewish groups who said they would try to disrupt the concert in protest over calls in Britain to scrap plans to rent new embassy premises in Tel Aviv from a company controlled by the London-based billionaire Lev Leviev, whom critics accuse of helping to develop Jewish settlements in the West Bank, reports Times Online.

2) Yoko will give a keynote address at the Frieze Art Fair Oct. 17 in London. It's the subject of a MySpace blog post and it's also on ImaginePeace.com.

3) Yoko's latest MySpace blog post is a 2007 interview she did with GQ.

4) We posted two separate blog posts Tuesday on the McCartney promo sleeve that's become a question and the rumor that Paul may close Yankee Stadium.

5) An autograph book signed by stars Diana Ross and The Beatles when they stayed at Dorset hotel sells for £3,375 (roughly $6, 254 USD), reports the BBC.

We'd appreciate hearing your comments about the digest.

McCartney plays cagey with promo sleeve for new record

A report in New Musical Express
is causing speculation, maybe deliberately, that Paul is taking a jab at his old label EMI. The picture in the report, taken from a promo to his new record, seems to show the letters EMI. Or is it EMA, as in Fireman? Either way, it's a nice bit of publicity for Paul's upcoming Fireman record.

Abbeyrd's Beatles Page news digest for Tues 9/23/08

Another day and more developments in the Beatle world.... happy reading, Steve...

1) To the person who asked what happened with Paul's album with Youth, we received this reply from Paul's UK press rep:

"Keep your eyes on the press in the coming week!"

2) Arthur Hillard comments on the Tomorrow Show DVD:

Tom Snyder, who has the voice and personality of a piece of cardboard, is (apparently) excited to be interviewing Paul and Linda live via satellite. They're on his TV monitor right now, and he's so excited that he spends several minutes talking about the actual Japanese TV monitor being used without even asking Paul a question.

Paul seems completely confused by this rudeness but unfortunately has the politeness to sit there in silence while Tom bangs on about nothing, burning up precious satellite time. By the time Tom eventually gets around to interviewing Paul, it's time to cut to an ad break; it's now five minutes into the interview and Paul hasn't said a word.

Tom then plays some of the SPIN IT ON promo clip and compliments Linda on her guitar playing, only to be corrected when she points out it was actually a piano she was seen playing.

Undeterred, Tom continues by asking about the seating arrangements at Paul's concert. How interesting. Paul tries to answer the questions, but looks like he'd rather walk off-camera and grab his tour manager, who could be consulted about the subject of exactly how many stadium doors should be opened to allow the crowd through in much more detail. Linda looks like she's about to fall asleep out of sheer boredom.

I tuned out for the rest of this yawn-fest, perking up only when Paul sarcastically commented "This is an interesting programe, isn't it?"

The Ringo Starr and John Lennon interviews were slightly better, but not by much.

Without a doubt, the dullest three Beatles interviews I have ever had the misfortune to see.

Comment: We disagree about the Lennon interview. For all of Snyder's quirks, it's a good one. But you're right about the others, especially the McCartney one, which is embarrassing.

Paul has named "You Know My Name" his favorite Beatles track due to its irregularity. The song was recorded over a two-year span, being worked on and shelved several times between 1967 and 1969. John came up with the lyric and title after seeing a postal advertisement reading, "You have their name? Look up their number." The karaoke segment was developed during the second sessions for the song, and a reference to 'A Hard Day's Night' associate producer Dennis O'Dell was added, prompting numerous calls to his home by crazed fans who chanted mindlessly "We have your name and now we've got your number", as well as drugged fans coming en masse to his doorstep wanting to live with him.

5) From Jeff Jacomowitz on the new Pete Best Band album "Hayman's Green":

Hey Steve,
Over this past weekend, Ken Dashow on 104.3 WAQX-FM here in NYC had on Pete Best during his "Breakfast With The Beatles" Sunday morning special. It was only for a short while but the segment had to do with the brand new Pete Best Band album called "Hayman's Green".
Dude, I was hooked! They played one song called "Step Outside" and it was vintage Fab! Pete is not trying to ride the Beatles wave, but given he still lives in Liverpool, the sound is vintage Liverpudlian. Too bad you cannot preview it on Amazon but it is a must-have CD!
Best always
Jeff R. Jacomowitz

6) From Franco Alvear in Chile:

HI STEVE !!!
Again, thanx very much for keeping up the best Beatles site on the net. I´m almost a daily visitor since 1996 ....("Anthology 2" days....)
Well, here´s a link to a clip that I made, and it´s the vocal take from "I Am The Walrus", just to remember how GREAT John´s voice was. Hope you like it... :)
Cheers Steve, see you.

7) David Fishof is auctioning rock memorabilia, including items signed by George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Here's the press release issued Monday:

Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp Founder David Fishof Auctions Personal Memorabilia Collection

The “All Access Rock Auction” hosted by Backstage Auctions offers up decades of rare and one of a kind memorabilia direct from the personal and private collection of legendary rock and roll promoter David Fishof.

Houston, TX – September 3, 2008 – It is with great excitement that Backstage Auctions announces the “All Access Rock Auction” featuring the private collection of legendary rock and roll promoter David Fishof.

David Fishof has two passions; sports and music. He has been successful in both endeavors, one as a high profile sports agent and the other as a successful concert promoter. Having worked in the music industry for over two decades he has had the good fortune working along side veteran rockers like Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey, The Monkees, Levon Helm, Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, Jack Bruce, and Dr. John, decided it was time to share his experiences with rock fans around the world. With the help of some of the musical legends he created the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp, a place where rock dreams come true.

David's impressive career highlights include producing the British Rock Symphony (Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton and Jon Anderson), The Happy Together Tour, The Monkees reunion tour, Dick Clark's American Bandstand Tour and Dirty Dancing. Fishof also created Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band concept together with Ringo Starr and over the years, has produced eight All Starr Band Tours.

David’s private collection features a variety of unique and one of a kind memorabilia pieces. "Having worked with so many great artists over the years, it makes it impossible to highlight just a few, but there is a Peter Max original painting of Ringo Starr that is very interesting because there are only three of them and Ringo owns the other two," explains Jacques van Gool, Backstage Auctions founder. The auction will feature everything from signed guitars, drum heads & sticks to record awards, original artwork, ephemera, recordings and more!

The All Access Auction will showcase well over 300 lots and feature some of rock and roll’s greatest icons. Interesting auction pieces include a Rock-Ola Beatles Yellow Submarine Jukebox (1 of 100), original Al Hirschfeld and LeRoy Neiman lithographs and drum heads signed by Ringo Starr and George Harrison. "All of my treasures have a great story. I had the honor of meeting George Harrison backstage at one of the All Star concerts and he signed a drum head for me, which is featured in the auction. I also have another one with Ringo and Ginger Baker signatures; in fact the night I got that one signed we were playing in Denver. Ginger and Jack Bruce showed up. Ringo got on stage and said, 'tonight we have two percent of Cream', it was classic Ringo," says Fishof.

A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit The Teenage Cancer Trust, a non profit organization improving the quality of life and chances of survival for teenagers and young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer, as well as several other charities that Fishof supports.

The auction will begin on Sunday, October 12 and will run for one week ending on Sunday, October 19th. The full auction catalog, which will feature over 300 auction lots, will be available online to view beginning Sunday, October 5th at www.backstageauctions.com.

Backstage Auction is a leading online auction company committed to offering authentic collectibles directly from the private collections of musicians and entertainment industry professionals. Founded on the principles of combining their clients’ career achievements and popularity with the demand and interest of fans who desire truly authentic and unique collectibles, Backstage Auctions is the place where rock legends live on.

Late add: Comment on the release of the "Help!" DVD from therese:

Hey Steve, just a comment to the bit written about the release of the DVD documentary on LOVE. Cirque has a 10 year exclusive contract with the Mirage concerning LOVE. There won't be a DVD available for the actual show until that contract is completed. According to Cirque, none of their shows are available on DVD until a contract has been fulfilled. LOVE is drawing large audiences, which translates into $'s for Cirque, the Mirage, and last but not least the Beatles. Also, the show changes, things are added and other things taken out of the performances that don't quite work.
I hope someday a DVD will be available, with extras that would include the changes in show that have occurred over time.
I saw LOVE last year. It was fantastic, overwhelming to the senses. There are no words to describe it. I only know I want to see it again, hear the wonderful music again, but sit in a different area (was at the front last year) so I can get a completely different view and see what I missed the first time around.
