New evidence suggests Eleanor Rigby may not be so lonely anymore

(11/12/08) A Liverpool hospital accounts log donated by Paul McCartney to the Sunbeam Trust may have solved the mystery of whether there was a real Eleanor Rigby, reports NME.com, the UK Guardian and the Press Association. The log contains the signature of an "E. Rigby" worked as a scullery maid at the hospital. The document, along with the discovery of a grave marked Eleanor Rigby in in the Woolton area of Liverpool in the 1980s, suggests that Rigby may have been a real person known to McCartney and was the inspiration for the song of the same name. McCartney had previously said he came up with the name Eleanor because of actress Eleanor Bron, who appeared in the film 'Help!'. The document will be auctioned by London's Idea Generation Gallery Nov. 27.
