"The U.S. vs. John Lennon" DVD: A review

The trailer for "The U.S. Vs. John Lennon"

"The U.S. Vs. John Lennon" (Lionsgate): Everyone knows the story of John Lennon and the Beatles. But it's less known, especially to younger audiences, how Lennon was the focus of FBI investigations during the Vietnam War Era because of the Nixon Administration's paranoia against protesters.
"The U.S. Vs. John Lennon" , which goes on sale Feb. 13, is a frightening reminder of that. The 96 minute documentary looks at how John Lennon changed from a cuddly Beatle to an outspoken protester of the Vietnam War and the Nixon Administration policies. It also recounts how the government used the controversy to hold the U.S. citizenship Lennon hoped for in hostage.
It was indeed a scary time. As Yoko recounts early in the film, while the Lennons were on a Michigan stage playing a benefit concert to help free John Sinclair, who was busted for possession of a small amount of marijuana, the FBI was in the audience taking down the lyrics to his songs. The film recounts how the government spied on him through wiretaps.
The hatred and pervasity of the Nixon Administration was chilling. In one of the bonus features, Nixon Administration member G. Gordon Liddy recalls how he ordered his children planning to attend a public event not to sing Lennon's song "Imagine" when it was played there.
The DVD includes interviews with his widow, Yoko Ono Lennon, George McGovern, Bobby Seale, Gore Vidal, John Dean, author Ron Kovic, John Sinclair, Geraldo Rivera, Walter Cronkite and Mario Cuomo.
It includes 10 clips of additional footage left out of the film. The most touching is a reading of the letter Yoko wrote to the New York State parole board requesting her husband's killer remain in jail. It's an emotional moment for Yoko, who manages to read the letter, but not without her voice quivering to the point of almost breaking.
For anyone who lived through the '60s turmoil, the documentary brings back frightening reminders of the paranoia that swept the country.
It also sends a message that the nation should have learned from its mistakes. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case thanks to the Bush Administration.

BREAKING NEWS: Beatles, Apple Computer settle lawsuit

The Beatles' Apple Corps and Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer Inc.) today announced a settlement of a longstanding dispute between the two companies over the use of their name and logos, reports Bloomberg.com and BBC News.

The BBC reports that Apple Inc. will take full control of the Apple brand and license certain trademarks back to the Beatles' record company Apple Corps for continued use.
In other words, the Beatles have sold their Apple trademark to Apple Inc.

Here is the press release issued today by the two companies announcing the agreement:

Apple Inc. and The Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd Enter into New Agreement

CUPERTINO, California and LONDON—Apple® Inc. and The Beatles' company Apple Corps Ltd are pleased to announce the parties have entered into a new agreement concerning the use of the name "Apple" and apple logos which replaces their 1991 Agreement. Under this new agreement, Apple Inc will own all of the trademarks related to "Apple" and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. In addition, the ongoing trademark lawsuit between the companies will end, with each party bearing its own legal costs, and Apple Inc. will continue using its name and logos on iTunes®. The terms of settlement are confidential.

Commenting on the settlement, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO said, "We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks. It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner, and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future."

Commenting on the settlement on behalf of the shareholders of Apple Corps, Neil Aspinall, manager of Apple Corps said, "It is great to put this dispute behind us and move on. The years ahead are going to be very exciting times for us. We wish Apple Inc. every success and look forward to many years of peaceful co-operation with them."

Apple Inc. spokeswoman Natalie Kerris declined to comment to Bloomberg on the settlement or to say whether a distribution agreement between the two to distribute the Beatles' online music is in the works. However, reports of such an agreement have been speculated for nearly a year, but hinged first on the settlement of the lawsuit.

Bloomberg reported that shares of Apple Computer fell 15 cents to $84.60 at 1:48 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.

Analysts have said that getting a distribution agreement for the Beatles' songs would be a huge boost to the online music industry.

Analysis: On the face of it, it's a big boost for the Beatles, but only if an online music agreement follows. The online music industry is desperate to have them. This agreement was almost unthinkable when it was first bandied about. It's interesting that in the time period the lawsuit has been working, the Beatles have gone from the single biggest attraction in rock to one with a lot of challengers. That, probably more than anything, had a lot to do with the settlement of the suit. It's also a gigantic boost for Steve Jobs, a huge Beatles fan himself. Indeed, the Cupertino headquaters of Apple Inc. has had a Beatles conference room for several years.

BREAKING NEWS: Rolling Stone confirms our reports about Beatles-iTunes deal

The current issue of Rolling Stone concurs with the reports you've read exclusively on Abbeyrd's Beatles Page and on Terry Ott's blog about an agreement between Apple and iTunes. A story on page 14 says "Two inside sources have confirmed to Rolling Stone that the Beatles catalog will be available for sale on iTunes, possibly within a month. It is speculated that the catalog may become available on Valentine's Day, to promote the band's new collaboration with Cirque du Soleil." It also mentions the Toronto Sun report, written by Beatle Bits blogger Terry Ott, which details a plan to market remastered CDs. A previous report that an announcement would be made Super Bowl Sunday (e.g. today) was denied by a Beatles spokesman previously. But the Rolling Stone article seems to indicate it may very well happen, just not that soon.

Remember, Abbeyrd's Beatles Page has been the place to be for news about the Beatles for over 10 years.
