Beatles night on "American Idol" -- your thoughts ...

Beatles night on "American Idol" attracted a huge viewing audience, reports Billboard.com. Nielsen Media Research, which tracks TV ratings, says 27 million people saw the start of the show, but the number grew to 31 million for the Beatles portion. Billboard says Beatle songs from "American Idol" Beatle night go on sale today.

At any rate, we'd like to hear from you about what you thought of this. Admittedly, we are not fans of "Idol", but we know a lot of people are. Abbeyrd Beatles Page midday Beatle news update (a little bit early)

<li>  Apple has put a further kibosh on the recent stories in the press that the Beatles catalog would soon be debuting on iTunes, reports Billboard.biz. "This is not news nor is it a scoop," says an Apple Inc. spokesman, declining further comment. Apple initially issued a "no comment", but stories continued to persist through the weekend. (Thanks to Beatlefan's Bill King for the alert.)

<li> The revamped Abbey Road Studios website we mentioned a couple of days ago will be unveiled in April, a studio source tells us.

<li> Nancy Andrews and May Pang will appear together on "The Joey Reynolds Show," WOR Radio, New York City, on March 10-11. The two will be interviewed live by Reynolds from midnight to 1 a.m. ET March 10. The show will repeat again on March 11. Andrews will be promoting her new book, "A Dose of Rock 'n' Roll" (Dalton Watson Fine Books) a photographic essay about her life with Ringo Starr while Pang is promoting Instamatic Karma (St. Martin's Press), chronicling her 18-month relationship with John Lennon.

Why we're not getting all excited about these latest iTunes stories ...

If there's an easy way to get the Beatles back in the news, all one needs to do is mention iTunes.
That's quite obvious, isn't it? The story two days ago linking any iTunes deal with Paul's divorce must have been seventh heaven for newspapers with gossip columns.
We wondered, though, if anyone bothered to read the thing. For one, there was no source. For another, the story didn't say much of anything beyond what was already known -- that the Beatles are looking to put their music on iTunes. When? As the Wicked Witch of the West said, "All in good time, my dears. All in good time."
Saturday, the unsourced story developed another angle from apparently out of nowhere. This time, the stories hinted the deal has been struck, thanks to Paul. But these stories forget one thing -- it's not up to Paul alone. And the three others have their own interests to consider -- and consider them they will.
If a deal has been struck, it's no surprise, really. It's long overdue. Why all this pussyfooting around with these stupid stories about Paul's divorce, though? If it's done, let's announce it and give everyone a real reason to get excited.
If this latest batch of rumors turns out to be another "wait and see," it'll be another postponing of something that many big artists have done and without so much quibbling.
The Beatles' catalog needed to go online, as the song says, yesterday. Putting it off isn't making the market any more lucrative. It's losing those dollars to internet downloads that you know and they know are happening as you read this.
What the heck are they waiting for?

NEW YORK, Feb. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- VH1 Classic is celebrating the life and
work of Dave Clark Five lead singer Mike Smith, who passed away yesterday at
the age of 64, with the television premiere of "Paul Shaffer And His British
Invasion: A Tribute To Mike Smith." The tribute concert will premiere on VH1
Classic on Saturday, March 1 at 6:30 PM.* The concert will re-air on VH1
Classic Saturday, March 1 at 10:00 PM and will be seen in high-definition on
MHD: MTV Networks' high-definition music channel Saturday, March 1 at 10:00
PM.

"Paul Shaffer And His British Invasion: A Tribute To Mike Smith," which took
place in New York in August 2005 features an all-star cast including Paul
Shaffer, The Zombies, Denny Laine, The Fab Faux, Billy J. Kramer, and Peter
and Gordon. Immobilized in a fall suffered in 2003, Smith gets the support
of his high profile friends as they perform such hits as "Come Home," "Any
Way You Want It" and "Glad All Over."

The Dave Clark Five will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on
March 10, 2008. The "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony" will air
live on VH1 Classic and MTV Networks' MHD: Music High-Definition channel on
Monday, March 10 at 8:30 PM/ET.

2/20/08 Beatle news midday update from Abbeyrd's Beatles Page

- Paul's "chuffed" about being honored with the Outstanding Achievement
Award at the Brit Awards today. "I'm quite amazed at this stage of my career
to still be getting awards. It'll go alongside the others. This one will
rank along with the top ones," he told the Daily Record.

- Fuego Entertainment said Wednesday saying it is going forward with
"remastering" the tapes they have in their possession with the goal of
issuing a two-disc audio set called "Jamming With Beatles and Friends."

- Cynthia Lennon has given her (and son Julian's) blessing to May Pang's new
book of John Lennon photos by writing an introduction to it.

- Why did John have a membership card in the Air Training Corps? We'll tell
you in the next Beatle News Briefs update late tonight.
