Hamburg dedicates memorial to the Fabs

Five statues honoring the Beatles have been unveiled in Hamburg in the city's first ever memorial to the Fabs, reports eflux-Media.

There are statues for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, plus one for Stu Sutcliffe and a hybrid for Pete Best and Ringo Starr, who both played drums with the group during the time they were there. To commemorate both, the designers of the statue placed the drums in front of it so it wouldn't favor either one.

Construction cost 550,000 euros ($776,000 USD), of which 350,000 euros were donated by the city and 200,000 were raised by sponsors and donors. A local radio station came up with the idea in 2001.

"It is about time that Hamburg commemorated this great band," said Mayor Ole von Beust during Thursday's inauguration.

The memorial square, when illuminated, looks like a spinning turntable.
