Advertiser uses "From Me To You" in first major British ad to feature a Beatle song

One of the images in John Lewis' Christmas ad
that uses Lennon-McCartney's "From Me To You."

British advertiser John Lewis has licensed "From Me To You" for its new Christmas ad spot, , said to be the first major British advertiser ever to use a Beatle song, reports Brand Republic News and LDPbusiness.

"I had been worried that Beatles songs would be priced out of the market, but was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case," Tom Nester-Smith, the client services director at Lowe London, which created the ad, told Brand Republic News. "We didn't set out to specifically create an ad based around a Beatles song, but we found that the lyrics summed up the ad's message that a present's value is in its appropriateness, rather than its price."

Sony/ATV, which holds the copyrights to the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, say it's the first time a Beatle song has been used by a major British advertiser.

(Comment: It's actually a cute little ad, though hearing Beatle songs used commercially is still a bit unsettling.)

  • Artist pays tribute to Obama campaign with poster influenced by Sgt. Pepper album

San Francisco artist Michael Cuffe has released a painting that marks the significance of the Obama Presidency, his successful presidential campaign and America's quest for hope with a nod to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album. The artwork, titled "Obama's Hopeful Hearts Club," is available for purchase as a print through his website for $20.

Ín an email, Cuffe told Abbeyrd's Beatles Page "I did a lot of campaigning for Obama. Made the calls, raised the
money, it was really a fun experience. Of course, I live in San Francisco which voted something like 95% for Obama, so I'm surrounded by it!" He also said that the president-elect hadn't seen the artwork, but "I had a friend who worked directly with VP Biden, and I'm told he was shown it. Obama, not as of yet.... hopefully soon!"

Here's the text of a press release Cuffe sent us explaining the whole concept:

Obama's Hopeful Hearts Club Painting Touches Barack and Beatles Fans Alike
Artist Michael Cuffe releases painting that marks the significance of the Obama Presidency, his campaign, and America's Quest for Hope.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 7, 2008 -- In the final days of Barack Obama's campaign for President, artist Michael Cuffe completed a painting that has received an overwhelming amount of attention from not only within the United States, but across the world. Obama's Hopeful Hearts Club is an inspired nod to The Beatles Sgt. Pepper
album cover, updated with individuals who made the Obama campaign a success and other interesting, inquisitive modern day personalities. It has received attention from over 70 countries, the Obama campaign itself, and is currently featured on the artist's Obama art gallery website http://www.TheObamaExperiment.com.

"I have been overwhelmed by not only the national attention, but the response worldwide. I've gotten emails that have spanned the globe from Kenya to Japan, in broken English that often read "You paint Obama good. Yay Obama!" Cuffe stated. “I feel so lucky to live in a time when the art I imagined while taking a shower can go worldwide overnight. That's just mindboggling to me,” Barack Obama art inspired the world with paintings, posters, and collectible stickers
throughout the 2008 political campaign season. Artist Michael Cuffe created The Obama Experiment to offer supporters fine political art prints that are new, fresh, and affordable. “People want art to remember their Obama experience,” explained Cuffe. “It's been a very personal journey for many.”

That journey has taken Cuffe's Hopeful Hearts Club imagery to rallies, campaign stops, and door-to-door throughout the country. "People immediately try to figure out who everyone is,” said Cuffe.

Campaign organizers in Boulder City, Nevada posted it in their staging location. As people came and went throughout the day, they would fill out a guess-who sheet. “They had built a game around the art piece,” explained Cuffe “which was just too cool.”

The Hopeful Hearts Club reflects the essence of hope the Obama campaign has inspired in millions of Americans over the past 2 years. “The 1967 Sgt. Pepper album manifested during a time of social, economic, and worldwide change,” said Cuffe. “I feel that we are in another moment where the choices we make are having a profound effect
on our lives, and the world at large.”

Everyone from Obama's grandmother to Martin Luther King take center stage in the piece. “I have taken careful consideration of individual's accomplishments, placement, and their relationship to the Obama campaign and to modern day change,” said Cuffe. “The only two outside these parameters are Bush and Cheney, whom were
replacements for the mannequin dummies in the original Sgt. Pepper.

Cuffe's artistic style is a blend of established art techniques and current digital technologies. "I call my style painted-collage,” explained Cuffe. “I digitally render images and build a painting around those images. Once the digital images are printed, cut, and placed, they are meticulously painted in fine detail to make them part of the painting. In the end, every detail is painted, so it takes on a different surrealism than your typical painting or collage,” Cuffe posts many of his works on YouTube, which draw thousands of views and offer a time-lapse glimpse into his studio. "With all my art, I film it and speed it up, so the viewer can be directly part of my creative process,” said Cuffe. “Obama's Hopeful
Hearts Club was a project that took over a month to complete, so individuals are always quite impressed to see a painting come together at 100,000 times the original speed.”

When asked if The Obama Experiment had been a positive experience, Cuffe exclaimed “Oh yes! It's been entirely wonderful opportunity to see my art travel all over this blue ball we call Earth. People from all over the world have told me how much The Hopeful Heart's Club has touched them, and that just feels wonderful.” One European country is has taken a particular liking to the piece, "Germany REALLY loves it. I mean REALLY REALLY loves it. The emails just keep coming in. I feel like Hasselhoff of the Obama art movement,” laughed Cuffe.

About The Obama Experiment: The Obama Experiment was founded in March 2008 by artist Michael Cuffe to raise awareness around then Senator Barack Obama's campaign, through art pieces and
    gallery shows.

Beatles announce starring role in new Rock Band video game

Update II (10/30/08) We attended the teleconference where the announcement was made. The Beatles confirmed they have signed an agreement for a full-blown version of "Rock Band" to hit the market place before next Christmas. Giles Martin will be the musical director. (There was no mention of Sir George Martin's involvement.) Few details of the actual game - how it will be played and how the music will be used, for example, were available because the game is still in development. However, it was revealed the game will use the UK versions of the songs. Most of the questions from reporters involved the game, though Jeff Jones, CEO of Apple, was asked about the Beatles finally getting to iTunes. Jones said those talks were still under discussion and no date or information was available. The conference ended, interestingly enough, with "Yesterday," a signal that, with this entry into the digital world, things are different for the Beatles from this point on.

  • Here's the official press release announcing the partnership:

THE BEATLES INSPIRE NEW MUSIC VIDEO GAME; APPLE CORPS LTD., MTV AND HARMONIX COME TOGETHER FOR UNPRECEDENTED DEAL

  • Game on! Beatles rumored to announce starring role in Rock Band video game today

We'll know for sure at 10 a.m. ET, but it appears that the Beatles are making yet another in-road into digital culture history today. No, it won't be that the Beatles are coming to iTunes, as long hoped, but as the announced stars of an upcoming edition of the "Rock Band" video game.

MTV/Viacom Inc., which owns "Rock Band," put out a surprise press invitation Wednesday which read:

APPLE CORPS LTD. AND MTV TO ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT TO DEVELOP UNPRECEDENTED GLOBAL MUSIC PROJECT

WHAT: Apple Corps Ltd. and MTV to announce an exclusive agreement to develop a global music project.

WHO: Jeff Jones, CEO of Apple Corps, Ltd.
Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks
Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music/Logo Group

    WHEN: Thursday, October 30, 2008
2:00 pm UK Time, 10:00 am ET, 7:00 AM PT

Speculation is rampant that the Beatles will be a part of "Rock Band 2." The Wall Street Journal said that, according to several unnamed sources, the Beatles reached an agreement to license songs to MTV Networks' Rock Band videogame series. The paper called it "a coup for the Viacom Inc. unit in its battle with rival Activision Blizzard Inc. for supremacy in the world of rock-and-roll videogames."

Entertainment Weekly has an unconfirmed report the game will be a stand-alone disc, "like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (which has moved more than a million units since its June 2008 release)," says EW, as opposed to downloadable content, which Dhani Harrison's group, thenewno2, already added to "Rock Band." Entertainment Weekly also reported that Harmonix, the company behind "Rock Band," put getting the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones on their wish list (and signed exclusive rights to AC/DC). MTV President Van Toffler said of the Beatles getting into "Rock Band," "I heard they're pretty popular. That would be big, right?"

The big question, asked by the Wall Street Journal, is whether the game will be attractive to first-generation fans, or only those younger.

In March, rumors began flying that the Beatles would become a part of "Guitar Hero." Martin N. "Marty" Bandier, chairman and chief executive at Sony/ATV Music Publishing that owns the John Lennon-Paul McCartney copyrights, told the Los Angeles Times he liked the idea of a dedicated Beatles edition of Activision's "Guitar Hero," saying, "It's something we have talked about and something I'd like to pursue." “To my view, it’s only a matter of time before we see Beatles songs that are the original recordings in motion pictures, in television work, and yes, maybe even one day in a commercial,” Bandier told the Financial Times. That paper reported in June that Apple was talking with both Harmonix for "Guitar Hero" and MTV Games for "Rock Band."

In July, however, the speculation for "Guitar Hero" pretty well ended when Charles Huang of "Guitar Hero" game developer Red Octane told Billboard, "Well, I don't have to tell you how difficult it is. Everybody in the world has tried to get the Beatles to put their music on all kinds of different platforms, and it certainly would be exciting, but it's also a difficult challenge."

By the way, here's something McCartney fans may not be aware of. There is currently a video game that features a McCartney song. "Guitar Hero: World Tour", which was just released this week, features the Wings' tune "Band on the Run."
