Music Icon Set To Rock Israel 43 Years After Ban Historic ‘Friendship First’ Concert Announced Hayarkon Park, Tel Aviv, Israel, 25th September 2008
43 years after being banned by the Israeli government, Paul McCartney today announces his ‘Friendship First’ concert in Israel. Following months of feverish speculation the wait is finally over as music’s most revered star announces that he will be playing in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday 25th September 2008, for the first time ever. This is in keeping with a series of special one-off unique shows that Paul has performed this year in places he has never visited before. Israel will finally get the chance to experience a night of music and history Macca-style; the night they have been waiting decades for.
Paul McCartney holds true the key principals of friendship – loyalty and respect – and the ‘Friendship First’ concert is an opportunity for people to celebrate these values whilst having a memorable night of fun and rock n’ roll.
Looking ahead to his first trip to Tel Aviv, Paul Said, “I’ve heard so many great things about Tel Aviv and Israel, but hearing is one thing and experiencing it for yourself is another. We are planning to have a great time and a great evening. We can’t wait to get out there and rock.”
Paul McCartney has nearly visited Israel on two previous occasions. The first was with The Beatles at the height of Beatlemania in the mid 60s, however at the time because Israel was short of foreign currency the promoter was unable to raise sufficient funds. After applying to a government committee for help the promoter’s appeal was declined as it was thought The Beatles might corrupt their youth. Some even believed that artistically The Beatles were not of a high enough standard! The second miss was with Wings in the late 70s, when the shows were cancelled after problems with the venue.
Earlier this year, Israel’s ambassador to Britain, Ron Prosor, apologised to The Beatles during a trip to Liverpool for the ‘misunderstanding’. In a letter he wrote: “There is no doubt that it was a great missed opportunity to prevent people like you, who shaped the minds of the generation, to come to Israel and perform.”
2008 has already seen Paul McCartney play a number of special one off concerts, whilst making international headlines and taking him to places he’s never been before. In June he received a hero’s welcome as he rocked the city of Liverpool when he played at Anfield Stadium as part of the city’s celebrations for the European Capital Of Culture. A couple of weeks later and Paul performed a spectacular free show, the ‘Independence Concert’, to over 350,000 people in Kiev’s Independence Square which was the largest outdoor music event in the history of the Ukraine. July then took Paul to the city of Quebec for yet another huge headline-making event as he performed to 300,000 people in the city’s national park, The Plains Of Abraham, to help celebrate Quebec’s 400th anniversary. Paul also found the time (only just though!) to join Billy Joel on stage for the ‘Last Play At Shea’ show in July, marking the last show ever at New York’s famous Shea Stadium. The Beatles were the first band to perform at Shea Stadium in 1965, which went down in history as the first ever stadium rock show. Speaking after his appearance at Shea, Paul commented, “It was great to complete the circle, starting there with The Beatles and then finishing this time round with ‘Let It Be’.”
If you add the attendance figures of the last 3 special shows together, Paul has performed to well over 650,000 people which is the equivalent of filling London’s O2 Arena over 36 times.

Chips Chipperfield, who produced the Beatles Anthology and won a 1996 Grammy Award (along with Neil Aspinall, Bob Smeaton, Geoff Wonfor and The Beatles for Best Long Form Music Video for the project), and also produced documentaries on Paul McCartney ("Liverpool Oratorio" from PBS' "Great Performances", "Put It There"), Jimi Hendrix ("Hendrix: Band of Gypsies"), the Pet Shop Boys, Elizabeth Taylor and The Who, has died after a heart attack suffered Tuesday in Ireland, reports musicweek.com. The Beatles issued the following statement on their website:

Chips was the Grammy award winning producer of the Beatles Anthology, and a long serving member of the Apple Corps family. Warm, wise and kind, he was loved and respected by all those who worked with him. His youthful spirit and enthusiasm for life will continue to be an inspiration to all those who knew him.

John Lennon's killer has been denied parole again. The Associated Press reports. The original document firming up the agreement for the Beatles to be managed by Brian Epstein, which was signed by all four members and Epstein, will be auctioned Sept. 4 in the UK, reports the BBC and the Canadian Press. It is expected to sell for £250,000 (roughly $475,325 USD), though auctioneeer Fame Bureau estimates the value at £300,000-£400,000 $600,000-800,000 USD. Epstein didn't sign the contract until eight months after the Beatles did, waiting to fulfill a promise to get the group a record contract. The signatures of Paul McCartney and George Harrison are augmented by their respective's fathers' signatures since they were under 21 at the time of the signing and needed the consent of their parents.
Here's the auctioneer's description from their website:
On October 1st 1962 Brian Epstein handed the four Beatles a revised management contract. Their previous management contract with Epstein had been signed by all four Beatles on the 24th January 1962 but Epstein's signature had been absent. Epstein commented in his memoirs that he deliberately refrained from signing the first contract to give the Beatles the ability to walk away from the agreement, if he did not fulfill his promise of a major recording contract for the young band. It is likely that the Beatles at that time , were never aware of the advantage Epstein had given them On the 1st October, however, Epstein signature was firmly on the contract, with a recording deal with EMI already established and the first single 'Love me Do' about to be released, Epstein now felt he had fulfilled his role and was about to reap his rewards in the form of 25% of the gross earnings of the band. The Beatles signed the agreement alongside Epstein thereby appointing him there manager for the following five years. It details Brian Epstein's obligations amongst others as:- undertaking all necessary advertising and publicity for the artists including publicity in connection with gramophone records..... To advise the artists on all matters concerning clothes make up and the presentation and construction of the artists' acts and also on all music to be performed in the course of, or in connection with such acts....
Included within this historic document are the signatures of Both Harrison and McCartney's fathers, required, as both young Beatles were under the age of 21. The Management Contract also contains two signatures by John Lennon , who, inadvertently signed in the wrong place and realising his mistake has struck through the first signature and signed again in the correct position.
This contract was later updated by a supplementary agreement signed,again, by all parties on the 22nd January 1963 and is included with this lot.
The revision removed the clause allowing either party to terminate the agreement with three months notice. All signatures on both the revised management contract and the supplementary agreement are accompanied by a bold red wax seal and the signatures of the attending witnesses. This incredible document established the most famous manager/group partnership in the music world and is itself a part of both music and British history.
