board update ... info from xsorbit

Xsorbit finally responded. Here's what they said: "There has been a major problem on our hosting site due to a major explosion on their facility. due to the nature of the server problem we were not able to provide you with prior notice because all of the servers are down at that moment."

 

They also said the board is up, but a quick check reveals it's not. I've already replied back that it's not, but it's possible it'll be back today. At any rate, moving is still a possibility. Stay tuned.

Still haven't heard from xsorbit, so I'm moving forward and assuming the board is down permanently. I'm looking into other boards with yuku (formerly ezboard) and proboards as the likeliest options. I'll try to make a decision in the next few days. Sorry for this.

It's official: "All Together Now" DVD has been delayed

We've gotten confirmation from the press representatives that the "All Together Now" DVD won't be out until sometime (no date set) in the fall. It will continue to be shown at world film festivals. The reaction so far, the rep told us, has been great.

Update: Yoko loses "Expelled" case

Yoko Ono lost her legal bid Monday to stop the use of a 15-second excerpt of John Lennon's song "Imagine" in a film challenging the theory of evolution. Ono had sued the makers of "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed," saying they used the song without permission. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein ruled that the filmmakers are protected by U.S. copyright law allowing work to be used for criticism or commentary. Anfield Liverpool Sound - 20

Update (6/1/08, 6:18 PM ET) After introducing it by saying, "Here's another place around here," he started "Penny Lane," then stopped after someone made a mistake, then started it again, to the great approval of the crowd. "At this point, we'd like to welcome a special guest to the stage," and introduced Dave Grohl, who guest starred on "Band on the Run and "Back in the U.S.S.R." Grohl left, then they played "Live and Let Die," then "Let It Be." After engaging in a little back-and-forth with the audience, he started into "Hey Jude." (We heard Bill Harry on the radio mention Paul hadn't played "Hippy Hippy Shake" onstage since 1963.) Paul left the stage, then came back with a guitar and sang "Yesterday." The words seemed to ring all too true, considering recent events. Then came the really big surprise -- "A Day in the Life," the first time he's ever sang this one live. He muffed the words a little in the middle, but he laughed it off. Then, he went directly into "Give Peace A Chance," in an obvious tribute to John. We're sure Yoko, who was in the audience, loved this. Next is a rousing version of "Lady Madonna." Paul's obviously pulling out the stops. He then re-introduced Dave Grohl, and the band ripped into the last song, "I Saw Her Standing There."

He talked about the memories flooding back when he comes back to Liverpool, then talked about doing a song that he's never done live. Paul McCartney was just introduced as "Sir Paul Mildred McCartney". The man who introduced him mentioned some of the people he's played with, including Stevie Wonder, Rupert the Bear and the Beatles. The first song is "Hippy Hippy Shake."

The BBC apparently has the set list and one of the songs is said to be "In Liverpool," a bonus track from the "Liverpool Oratorio" DVD.

Update (6/1/08, 11:30 AM ET) From Peter Fitzpatrick:

Hi Steve,

Arrived yesterday for tonight's concert. As we flew over the city we could see Anfield Stadium and the colourful stage setting. My wife & I had booked a table at the Blakes restaurant located in the Hard Days Night hotel. Theme of course is the work of Peter Blake. Guess who was sitting at the next table ? Mr Blake. A couple of folk interrupted his meal to take photos and get autographs which I thought was a litte rude. As he left the restaurant he stopped at our table an apologized (!) as he wanted to point out a particular image on the wall to his friend. We chatted for a few minutes and when I explained that I had not wanted to interrupt his meal he laughed and aske if I'd like him to sign something. He kindly wrote a personalized note on the hotel stationery. Very sweet. He is attending tonight's concert. Must run. I'll send a report from the show.

Paul McCartney says he's "ready to party" at Anfield Liverpool Sound concert

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, Paul McCartney says he's looking forward to the June 1 show.
“I think it will be a great evening and I’m ready to party. The thing about it was, the concert was talked about last year and there were a lot of exciting ideas like Salthouse Dock. But I said to people, make sure you can do this because I’ve had experience of these great ideas – it’s great to talk them, but to pull them off is something else. I asked, 'Do you leave this facility for the people of Liverpool?' They said it was going to be filled in again, and when the figures came in it was just crazy money. We said, 'we’ve got to do a gig, we ought to do a gig,' and they changed the venue to Anfield, and I said well, that’s more practical – you don’t have to build a venue. I think it will be a really nice show and a great evening.”
He countered rumors that Ringo will join him onstage for the show and said this was unlikely. “That was never going to be on the cards. He opened the year,” he said.
He confirmed Dave Grohl will be performing with him. “We’ve got a few little surprises up our sleeve, it will be a bit different from our normal shows. Dave Grohl is going to do something with us, so that will be nice. That’s it basically. It’s not that long a show. There’s a curfew at this place, but I am doing a full set. It will be a mixture of music. The idea will be to give the audience what I think they would want.”
A few tickets are still available at http://www.liverpool08.com. Highlights of the concert will be aired on BBC2 at 11 p.m. that night.

Update: Paul to receive honorary degree from Yale today

(5/26/2008, UPDATE 11:30 A.M. ET) The Associated Press http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iydMQbj3lEaRPxkqA5XbcKp1OjrAD90TCSN80 reported that the university, in awarding the honorary degree to McCartney, said no one compares with McCartney and that he awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock, roll, rhythm and blues.

(5/26/2008) The Yale Daily News reports Paul McCartney will receive an honorary degree from the university at 10:30 A.M. ET today at the commencement ceremony at the University's Old Campus. The paper reported McCartney was spotted several times around the area, and was at Sunday night's dinner at the Yale Center for British Art. The New Haven Register printed a picture of McCartney and Tony Blair outside the British Center for the Arts at Yale and reported that Paul was seen touring a downtown art gallery and attending a dinner with Yale dignitaries. Sources told the publication he would be honored at the commencement ceremony on Monday, which begins at 10:30 a.m. ceremony on the Old Campus.

“Be prepared to fail as well as to succeed, and realize it is failure, not success, that defines character. Sir Paul McCartney reminded me that the first record company the Beatles approached rejected them as a band no one would want to listen to,” Blair told the students.

The paper says honorary degrees are awarded by the Yale Corporation, the University’s governing body, based on the recommendations of a committee comprised of Corporation members, faculty and alumni. The identities of the recipients are not traditionally revealed in advance.

Asked to comment by the paper, Yale President Richard Levin, in an e-mail, said, “Here’s one comment: Yesterday … all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it seems as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Or perhaps another, relative to the Sir Paul sightings: 'Here, There and Everywhere.'”

While I was at Mohegan Sun seeing Billy Joel in concert (Mark Rivera was wearing a Beatles Help pin and Billy Joel sang "A Hard Day's Night) I missed the news that Paul was in New Haven around the Yale campus. The media reports that Paul will get an honorary degree today. This is usually a closely guarded secret (I know I work at Yale) but seeing Paul out and about with Tony Blair sort of gave it away .

Breaking: Yoko wins round one of Boston film lawsuit

A judge Wednesday accepted Yoko Ono's motion to throw out allegations filed by World Wide Video LLC that accused Ono of copyright infringement over rare footage of John Lennon, said Ono's Boston lawyer, Jonathan M. Albano, reported  the Boston Herald  and  Associated Press. An attorney for World Wide Video, Ono's opponents in the suit, said, "We need to study our options to see what we'll do next." The judge did not rule on two other issues -- that Ono owns the copyright to the tapes and that another defendant had no right to sell the tapes to her.

Report: Oasis axe Zak

Oasis have reportedly fired Zak Starkey as their drummer, reports the UK Sun. An unnamed source quoted by the tabloid said, "There have been arguments with Noel Gallagher and general disagreements. It looks like the album will be his last involvement with the band.”

McCartney, Mills marriage ended

Without either of the principals present, the stormy marriage of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills came to a formal end during a 30-second hearing at London's High Court on Monday, reported Reuters. Justice Hugh Bennett granted the petition by Mills on the grounds that the couple had lived apart for two years.
